Tokyo stocks open lower on profit-taking




Tokyo - Tokyo stocks opened lower Tuesday as investors sold shares to lock in profits from the previous day's gains. The benchmark Nikkei 225 Stock Average declined 185.43 points, or 1.47 per cent, in morning trading to 12,439.03.
The broader Topix index of all first-section issues was also down 21.44 points, or 1.76 per cent, to 1,194.97.
Tokyo players sold shares to reap profits from Monday's rises when the Tokyo indices shot up more than 3 per cent on the US government taking control of the two largest US mortgage lenders and guarantors, Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac.
On currency markets at 9 am (0000 GMT), the dollar was quoted at 108.00-05 yen, down from Monday's 5 pm quote of 108.78-80 yen.
The euro was quoted at 1.4131-36 dollars, down from Monday's 5 pm quote of 1.4309-10 dollars, and at 152.68-73 yen, down from 155.66-70 yen.
